What is the long/short ratio?
The long/short ratio is a snapshot of how many traders (or how much position size) on a perpetual futures market is positioned long versus short. Exchanges publish it a few different ways, but the core idea is always the same: it tells you which side of the trade is more crowded, not which side is right.
A ratio of 2.0 means twice as many longs as shorts by whatever the exchange is counting (accounts or position value). It says nothing directly about price direction. It says something about positioning, and positioning is what feeds liquidations when price moves against the crowd.
Account ratio vs position ratio: two different numbers
Most exchanges actually publish two long/short ratios and they can diverge meaningfully:
- Account (or trader) ratio: the percentage of accounts holding a net long position vs net short. This is a headcount. One whale with a $50M short and one retail account with a $200 short both count as "1 short" here.
- Position (or size-weighted) ratio: the percentage of total open notional that is long vs short. This weights by dollars, so it reflects where the real risk sits.
When the account ratio and position ratio point in opposite directions, it usually means retail is piled on one side in large numbers while a smaller group of larger accounts is on the other. That split is itself informative: it tells you whether a crowded reading is a retail phenomenon or a size phenomenon.
Top-trader ratio vs all-account ratio
Some venues (Binance is the best-known example) also break the ratio out by top traders, meaning the accounts with the largest position size or highest margin balance, separate from the all-account ratio that includes every account on the platform. This split matters because retail and larger accounts often lean different directions at extremes.
Neither the top-trader nor the all-account ratio is inherently "smarter." Top-trader data reflects fewer, larger positions, which reduces noise but can be skewed by one or two big accounts. All-account data reflects the broader herd, which includes more noise but also captures genuine retail sentiment. Reading both together is more useful than trusting either alone.
Why a lopsided ratio marks a crowded, vulnerable side
The reason traders watch this ratio at all comes down to mechanics, not sentiment. When one side of a market gets heavily overweight, say 75% long, it means a large amount of leveraged exposure is sitting on the same side of the trade, at broadly similar entry prices, with stop-outs and liquidation prices clustered in a predictable band.
If price moves against that crowded side, the resulting forced closes (liquidations, margin calls, panic exits) tend to accelerate the move, because closing a long means selling, and a cascade of forced selling pushes price down further, which triggers more of the same longs. This is the same mechanical logic behind a short or long squeeze: crowding creates fuel, and fuel needs a spark, not a certainty.
This is why a lopsided ratio is read as positioning risk, a description of who is exposed and where, rather than a prediction that price is about to reverse. Extreme ratios can persist for a long time in a strong trend before anything triggers a flush.
How the ratio connects to open interest and liquidation levels
The long/short ratio is most useful in combination with other positioning data, not on its own:
- Open interest tells you how much total exposure exists. A high long/short ratio with falling open interest means longs are already unwinding on their own, less fuel for a forced move. A high ratio with rising open interest means fresh leveraged longs are still piling in, more fuel.
- Funding rate is the direct cost signal for a crowded side: a persistently positive funding rate alongside a high long/short ratio confirms longs are paying to stay in the trade, adding pressure to eventually exit.
- Liquidation levels turn the ratio into a price map: they estimate where the crowded side's stop-outs actually sit, so you're not just told "longs are crowded" but roughly at what price that crowding becomes a forced-selling event.
Reading the ratio next to a liquidation heatmap or liquidation map turns an abstract percentage into a concrete, visual read of where the pressure sits on the chart.
How to actually use it: context, not a trigger
The long/short ratio works best as one input in a broader read of the market, never as a standalone buy or sell signal. A few practical habits:
- Watch the direction of change, not just the level. A ratio climbing from 1.0 to 2.5 over a few hours tells you positioning is actively shifting, which is often more informative than where it sits at any single moment.
- Cross-check account vs position ratio. If they disagree, ask why, retail crowding and whale positioning are different risks with different implications.
- Combine with funding and open interest before treating a reading as meaningful. A high ratio with flat or falling open interest is a much weaker signal than the same ratio with open interest still rising.
- Never treat "everyone is long" as "price will go down." It means the long side is more exposed to a downside shock, which is a statement about fragility, not timing.
